Longannet Appraisal Well

In early 2007 Composite Energy drilled an appraisal well located within the Longannet Power Station complex; the site is within the Fife Council area and was drilled using the G55 drilling rig.

The well was drilled to 900m, the primary purpose being to drill and retrieve cored coal back to surface. Using the core, it is possible to assess the gas content and other characteristics of the coal, making it possible, in part, to determine the potential for developing it as a resource.

The well will also assist in aiding the understanding of the geological structures and coal sequence depths in the Longannet area, making it possible to better plan for the pilot test development that Composite Energy hopes to trial in the Longannet area.

It will also be possible to use the core taken from the Longannet well to provide test material for the CO2 project which Composite Energy is leading.

At the end of drilling, this wellbore was cemented and abandoned in accordance with the BERR and coal authority guidelines and the site restored to its former use as hard standing for vehicle parking.
